MAIN CASING

The Torqueflite 727 main case FOR Mopar’s (Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge) has only a few variations.1962 to 1965 cases have a rear pump assembly.

Early cases 1962 - 1966, have the gear selector mechanism internally mounted and is operated by a cable entering the case on the left hand side of the case.

All cases after 1967 all have the gear selector mounted externally, and operated by a shaft passing into the case vertically,  also on the left hand side of the case.

The rear pump assembly on 62 -65 Torqueflites was used to enable the vehicle to be “bump” started, and towed. In which case the rear pump lubricated the transmission as it was turned by the prop shaft. After that starter motors were considered to be reliable enough to eliminate the pump from the design.

1966 and later vehicles CANNOT be “bump” started or towed.. They can be towed IF the prop shaft is disconnected from the axle.

all year cases are made for either

  • slant six engines.
  • small block V8, LA engines,
  • big block V8 B/RB/Hemi engines.

The easiest way to distinguish between the two V8 engine transmissions, is to measure the distance between the top 2 mounting holes for the transmission to the engine, on the bell housing.

LA SMALL BLOCK HOUSING MEASURES 7 3/4

B/RB BIG BLOCK AND 426 HEMI CASING MEASURES 6 7/16”
