EXTENSION or TAIL HOUSING

GENERALLY THE EXTENSION HOUSING IS MADE OF ALUMINIUM. HOWEVER SOME 4 X 4 ADAPTORS ARE CAST IRON.

THEY ALL ARE SPECIFIC TO THEOUTPUT SHAFT LENGTH.

EARLY TRANSMISSIONS DID NOT HAVE A PARK FACILITY.  THE REAR OF THE CASING HAD CAST IN BRACKETS FOR A DRUM BRAKE MOUNTED ON THE BACK OF THE HOUSING. THE OUT PUT SHAFT WAS INTERNALLY THREADED TO ACCEPT THE DRIVE FLANGE FOR THE PROP SHAFT.

2 WHEEL DRIVE HOUSINGS RETAIN A BEARING TO SUPPORT THE OUTPUT SHAFT. THE BEARING IS LOCATED ON THE SHAFT WITH 2 CIRCLIPS AND IN THE HOUSING WITH ANOTHER EXTERNAL CIRCLIP AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE BEARING. ACCESS TO THE EXTERNAL CIRCLIP IS VIA A COVER RETAINED WITH 2 SCREWS. THIS COVER IS USUALLY COVERED BY THE TRANSMISSION MOUNT. THE REAR OF THE HOUSING HAS  BUSH THAT SUPPORTS THE DRIVE SHAFT YOKE.

IN 1972 A HD EXTENSION HOUSING WAS INTRODUCED. THE ACCESS TO THE SHAFT SUPPORT ROLLER BEARING WAS MOVED TO THE SIDE AND NOT HIDDEN UNDER THE REAR MOUNT PAD. THE WHOLE CASING WAS STIFFENED WITH EXTRA RIBS AND THICKER CASTING THICKNESS.

4 X 4 APPLICATIONS GENERALLY HAVE ONLY 1 CIRCLIP ON THE SHAFT, TO STOP MOVEMENT FORWARDS. THERE IS NOT AN EXTERNAL CIRCLIP ON THE BEARING, REARWARD MOVEMENT IS BY A STEPPED LOCATION FOR THE BEARING.
